KABUL: Initial vote-counting results from the U.S. midterm elections show Democrats leading Republicans in both chambers of Congress, the House of Representatives and the Senate.
According to preliminary figures, Democrats have won 71 seats in the House and 45 in the Senate, while Republicans have secured 32 House seats and 34 Senate seats.
The report said results have been announced in 103 of the 435 House electoral districts.
A party needs 218 seats to secure a majority in the chamber.
Meanwhile, results have been confirmed in 14 of the 35 Senate races and a total of 51 seats are required to obtain a majority in the Senate.
Vote counting is still underway, and the final results will determine which party gains control of both chambers of the U.S. Congress.
