KABUL: The Bangladeshi government has agreed to open up 93% of public service jobs to competition, a week after deadly student protests in the country.
The decision was made at the request of Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
According to reports, the order from the Bangladeshi government carries the authority of a court verdict and will be implemented.
Previously, the Bangladeshi government had announced that 30% of total public service jobs would be reserved for the families of victims of Bangladesh’s independence war from Pakistan.
With the order to open 93% of these jobs to competition, the protesters have raised new demands, including the revocation of the night-time curfew, restoration of the internet, and the reopening of universities.
The protests of the past week in Bangladesh have led to the death of nearly 200 people and the arrest of hundreds more.
