KABUL: The Islamic Resistance Movement of Hamas has appointed Yahya Sinwar as the political leader of Hamas in replace of Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Zionist Israel’s attack in Tehran last week.
“The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas announces the selection of Commander Yahya Sinwar as the head of the political bureau of the movement, succeeding the martyr Commander Ismail Haniyeh, may [God] have mercy on him,” Hamas said in a statement.
Sinwar, 61, is seen by the Zionist Israel as the mastermind behind the October 7 attack by Hamas inside Israeli territory, in which more than 1,100 people were killed and more than 200 others taken captive.
The Zionist strikes in Gaza have claimed the lives of nearly 40,000 Palestinians, thousands of them women and children, displaced almost its entire 2.3 million people and caused an unprecedented humanitarian crisis with widespread starvation and health emergencies.
