KABUL: The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), Roza Otunbayeva, has said that the UN is trying to hold a joint meeting with many countries and institutions regarding alternative cultivation of poppy in the country.
She made the remarks in a meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister for Political Affairs Mawlavi Abdul Kabir, Arg said in a statement on Wednesday.
According to the statement, praising the Islamic Emirate’s position and commitment in the fight against narcotics, Otunbayeva said that the meeting will be attended by the representatives of the Islamic Emirate and is going to discussing narcotics, treatment of drug addicts and assistance for farmers.
A lot of work is needed to eliminate the effects of drug production and labor for several decades and to provide people with suitable alternatives to farming, she said.
Meanwhile, Mawlavi Kabir said that the Islamic Emirate had established a high commission to effectively fight against narcotics, which will hold a joint meeting with other international organizations, including UNAMA.
The Islamic Emirate has a clear position in the fight against narcotics and does not allow the cultivation of any type of narcotic plant in the country, the deputy PM said, asking for the help of partner institutions and countries in the fight against narcotics
He reminded that UNAMA should share the facts and recent developments in Afghanistan with the Security Council.
