WHO officials committed to strengthening healthcare sector in Afghanistan

KABUL: Dr. Hanan Balkhy, the Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Eastern Mediterranean, and her accompanying delegation in a meeting with the Acting Minister of Public Health Mawlavi Noor Jalal Jalali have expressed their commitment to securing aid from regional countries to bolster the healthcare sector in Afghanistan.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Public Health, the meeting was also attended by representatives from UNICEF, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and other organizations in Afghanistan.

The meeting participants discussed key issues, including the expansion of healthcare services, strengthening efforts to eradicate polio and implementing vaccination programs, constructing health centers along highways, treating malnourished patients, conducting surveys to prevent diseases, and controlling infectious diseases.

The acting Minister of Public Health emphasized the importance of collaboration with WHO, UNICEF, and the Gates Foundation in strengthening Afghanistan’s healthcare system.

Officials from these organizations assured their commitment to improving healthcare service delivery in the country.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Health is striving to enhance and achieve self-sufficiency in the healthcare sector through domestic resources.
