KABUL: The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in a statement on Sunday after one day victory of opposition forces led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s government, called the Assad regime as a dictatorship.
“The future of Syria belongs to its people, who should determine their own destiny,” he said, adding that the UN office based in Damascus is ready to assist the Syrian people in achieving the future they desire.
Referring to the 14-year civil war in Syria, he described the current opportunity as historic.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Jolani, the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, stated in a message on Syrian state television following the capture of Damascus that the country would not go back.
