KABUL: Adam Boehler, the special representative of Donald Trump for U.S. citizens imprisoned abroad, along with a delegation including Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. Special Representative for Afghan Peace, met with Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Foreign Minister of Afghanistan.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement today that discussions centered on expanding bilateral relations between Kabul and Washington, issues concerning citizens of both countries, investment, and other opportunities in Afghanistan.
The statement noted that the Foreign Minister highlighted the previous negotiations between the two sides in Doha and mentioned that there is now a good opportunity to normalize relations, stating that there are no complex issues that would be difficult to resolve in their bilateral ties.
The U.S. delegation also expressed condolences regarding the recent earthquake in eastern Afghanistan and emphasized that Kabul and Washington should work to follow up on the outcomes of past meetings.
The delegation stressed that the U.S. respects the freedom of nations to choose their path and does not wish to impose anything on the Afghan people.
Both sides reiterated the importance of continuing discussions on the future of U.S.-Afghan relations, especially concerning the citizens imprisoned in both countries.
