KABUL: Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, stated that Russia’s energy infrastructure is a legitimate military target for Ukraine, arguing that these assets help sustain Moscow’s war machine against Kyiv.
According to The Guardian on Sunday evening, the Ukrainian President also noted that the U.S. has issued a new deadline for Kyiv and Moscow to end the war and reach a peace agreement, suggesting that the conflict should conclude by June (in less than five months).
He said, “We do not have to choose between hitting military targets or energy; they are one and the same. We either produce weapons and attack theirs, or we target the source of income that generates their funding, which is their energy sector. All these are legitimate targets for us.”
Zelensky also indirectly mentioned that the new deadline might coincide with the upcoming U.S. midterm elections.
He indicated that both Kyiv and Moscow delegations have been invited for further discussions this week.
As Zelensky announced the new U.S. deadline for ending the war, it is noted that in two weeks, the conflict initiated by Moscow against Kyiv will enter its fifth year.
