KABUL: Khawaja Asif, the Defense Minister of Pakistan, has recently admitted that his country’s involvement in Afghanistan’s past wars was a “mistake” and has had unfortunate consequences for Islamabad.
The Pakistani newspaper Dawn reported this morning, that during a parliamentary session, he stated that two former military “dictators” of Pakistan joined the war in Afghanistan not for Islam, but to please a superpower. He added, “We have denied our history and have not accepted our mistakes. Terrorism is a reflection of the errors committed by dictators in the past.”
Asif pointed out that while Kabul and Islamabad may have agreed in the past, that consensus no longer exists.
Khawaja Asif expressed concern about the lack of national unity in Pakistan in condemning “terrorist acts,” noting that religious hatred is currently being fueled under a “global conspiracy.”
