KABUL: The European Union has reaffirmed its support for humanitarian mine clearance programmes in Afghanistan, as landmines and unexploded ordnance continue to pose a deadly threat to civilians, particularly children.
In a report released by the European Commission on the situation of mine contamination in Afghanistan, the EU said it would continue backing demining efforts across the country.
According to the report, the bloc will provide support through approved partner organisations, including The HALO Trust, to sustain mine action activities.
The report notes that Afghanistan remains one of the most heavily mine-contaminated countries in the world, with vast areas affected by landmines and unexploded remnants of war.
One of the EU\u2019s key priorities in supporting mine clearance is the removal of mines from contaminated agricultural land in rural areas, aimed at restoring livelihoods and improving food security for local communities.
The renewed commitment comes as several demining organisations during meetings with the leadership of Afghanistan\u2019s National Disaster Management Authority, had earlier appealed for financial funding to continue their operations.
