KABUL: The United Nations has announced that Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the UN, has appointed \u201cBruno Georges Lemarquis\u201d as his new Deputy and Coordinator in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The organization issued a statement today saying that Mr. Lemarquis has been selected and assigned within the UN\u2019s Deputy leadership team in Afghanistan (UNAMA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bruno Georges Lemarquis is a French politician who holds an engineering degree in tropical agriculture. He has worked in various parts of the United Nations so far, and his most recent assignment from 2022 to the present has been as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the UN stabilization mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The statement adds that, in addition to heading UNAMA, Mr. Lemarquis will also take on responsibility for coordinating the UN\u2019s humanitarian affairs in Afghanistan, a role previously carried out by Indrika Ratwatte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This senior UN diplomat has been working with the organization in Afghanistan since 1992.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The statement also said that he carried out multiple field missions with UNDP in countries such as Somalia, Haiti, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and Cambodia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
