KABUL: Senior American sources have reportedly confirmed that the U.S. military\u2019s \u201cFreedom Project\u201d in the Strait of Hormuz was suspended after Mohammed bin Salman opposed the use of Saudi bases and airspace for the operation.
According to NBC News, citing at least two U.S. officials, Saudi Arabia denied Washington access to the Prince Sultan Air Base for the mission.
The report states that the Saudi crown prince was angered after Donald Trump announced the \u201cFreedom Project\u201d publicly on social media without prior consultation with Riyadh.
U.S. officials reportedly acknowledged that the operation\u2019s success in supporting freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz would have been impossible without access to Saudi military facilities and air corridors.
The sources added that although there had been continuous contacts between Mohammed bin Salman and President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Saudi leadership had not been consulted about the operation beforehand.
According to the report, the sudden announcement of the operation also caught several U.S. allies in the Middle East by surprise.
