KABUL: Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) should be accompanied by strict safeguards and international regulations, saying that without an appropriate framework for its development and use, the technology’s potential harms could outweigh its benefits.
In an approximately 6,000-word essay, Gates said AI could become a powerful tool for creating opportunities and advancing human progress, but could also create risks including job displacement, inequality, misuse, cyber threats, misinformation and negative effects on human cognitive abilities.
Gates has called on governments to establish regulations governing AI use while ensuring that humans retain a central role in important decisions.
He stressed that the future of AI should not be viewed solely from the perspective of technological advancement, arguing that international and practical strategies should be developed in advance to protect jobs, economies and societies.
Gates also called for greater international cooperation and global oversight to prevent potential risks associated with AI.
