KABUL: Nicolás Maduro, the ousted president of Venezuela, has asked a U.S. federal court to dismiss drug trafficking charges against him.
Maduro argued that, as the president of a sovereign country, he is entitled to immunity from prosecution under international law and that the U.S. case against him has no legal basis.
According to Reuters, the charges were filed in a U.S. federal court in Manhattan, New York.
Maduro’s defense lawyer also argued that his client should be protected by legal immunity because of his official position as a head of state.
If Maduro’s request is rejected, his trial is scheduled to begin on June 1, 2027.
