KABUL: Assad al-Shabani, the Syrian Foreign Minister, has met with an Israeli diplomatic delegation during his visit to France.
The Israeli news website The Times of Israel citing the Syrian state media SANA, reported early today that the aim of al-Shabani’s meeting with the Israeli delegation was to restore and reinforce stability in southern Syria.
The report mentions that Syrian and Israeli officials are engaged in discussions, mediated by the United States, to reduce tensions.
SANA reported that the main focus of the talks has been on reducing tensions between Damascus and Tel Aviv and ensuring that Israel does not interfere in Syria’s internal affairs.
The two sides are also said to have discussed the reactivation of the 1974 UN-brokered separation agreement between Israel and Syria, which includes a demilitarized zone in the Golan Heights.
Details regarding the outcomes of these discussions have not yet been disclosed to the media.
The diplomatic meeting between the Syrian and Israeli delegations follows a series of tensions that had brought both countries to the brink of full-scale war.
