Escalating tensions in U.S.-India relations: Trump increases tariffs on Indian goods to 50%

KABUL: U.S. President Donald Trump has doubled tariffs on goods from India to 50% in response to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil.

The French news agency reported the tariff increase, noting that the president has signed an order to implement the 50% tariff starting today.

The report specifies that certain Indian goods, including pharmaceuticals, computer chips, and smartphones, will be exempt from these tariffs.

Economic experts have interpreted the 50% increase in U.S. tariffs on Indian goods as a commercial sanction against New Delhi by Washington.

The United States is India’s largest export market, with exports valued at $87.3 billion in 2024.
