KABUL: Civilian diplomatic delegations from the Lebanese government and the Israeli occupation regime have met for the first time in nearly 40 years in a meeting chaired by the United States.
According to Al Jazeera on Wednesday night, the discussions took place during a session of the ceasefire oversight committee between Beirut and Tel Aviv in the town of Naqoura, located in southern Lebanon.
Nawaf Salam, the Prime Minister of Lebanon, stated that the country is willing to engage in discussions that go beyond security issues with the Israeli occupation regime.
However, he emphasized that the normalization of relations with this regime is contingent upon a peace process.
Mr. Salam described the current talks between the delegations of Beirut and Tel Aviv as focused solely on “ending hostilities,” “liberating Lebanese hostages,” and “the complete withdrawal of Israel from Lebanese territory.”
This comes in the wake of a recent attack by the Israeli occupation regime that killed a senior Hezbollah leader and five of his companions in the heart of the Lebanese capital.
