KABUL: The fourth meeting of the “Counter-Narcotics Working Group” under the Doha Process was hosted by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in Kabul.
Hafiz Zia Ahmad Takal, head of the Information and Public Relations Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a post on his X today, that representatives of the current administration stated during the meeting that following the issuance of a decree by the Amir al-Mu’minin, the cultivation of opium poppy has nearly reached zero in Afghanistan.
They said: “ The Islamic Emirate showed practically that they are decisive firm and have the capability to combat drug trafficking, noting that while counter-narcotics measures are implemented within Afghanistan, the benefits extend to all countries in the region and globally.”
The representatives emphasized that maintaining and continuing these achievements requires shared responsibility, collective investment, and cooperation based on mutual trust.
Concerns were also raised regarding synthetic drugs, with representatives pointing out that the sources and raw materials for these substances lie beyond Afghanistan’s borders. They warned that if not addressed, the repercussions would be felt not only in Afghanistan but also in the region and worldwide.
The statement noted that UN officials, UNAMA, and participants in the fourth drug working group meeting under the Doha Process recognized and praised the efforts and achievements of the Afghan government in combating drugs since the issuance of the leader’s decree, calling it a historic achievement for Afghanistan.
It is worth mentioning that the fourth meeting of the “Counter-Narcotics Working Group” in the Doha Process included representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, Public Health, UNAMA, affiliated UN agencies, international and regional organizations, the European Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, ambassadors, envoys, diplomats, and experts participating both in person and online.
