KABUL: Severe flooding triggered by heavy rainfall has destroyed dozens of homes and caused extensive financial losses in parts of Kahsan district of the country’s western province of Herat, local sources said.
The floods over the past 24 hours have swept away residents’ belongings in the affected areas.
According to local information, the worst damage was reported in the border town of Islam Qala, located in the Kahsan district.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that the floods in Islam Qala have destroyed more than 50 houses, either partially or completely. Images that went viral on social media show floodwaters inundating homes and covering household possessions with mud and debris.
There is still no confirmed data on the total extent of the damage suffered by residents of Islam Qala and Kahsan district, and government authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
The flooding comes after the Meteorological Department of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation warned on Sunday of the likelihood of heavy rainfall and snowfall in several provinces, including Herat province.
