KABUL: Richard Lindsay, the UK Special Representative for Afghanistan, has said that the United Kingdom will soon send humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.
According to a statement released on Saturday by the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS), Lindsay made the remarks during a meeting with Shaikh Shahabuddin Delawar, President of the ARCS.
The aid will be delivered through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the statement said, adding that the two sides reportedly discussed support for internally displaced people, returning Afghan migrants, and expansion of humanitarian assistance in the country.
Delawar briefed the British envoy on the activities of the Afghan Red Crescent, saying the organization currently provides medical services to around 1,500 mental health patients across seven regional zones, both in treatment centers and at home.
He also announced plans to open a specialized hospital for children with congenital heart defects, which is expected to perform surgeries for up to 2,000 children annually.
The meeting comes after the UK Foreign Office announced plans to provide an additional £1 million in humanitarian aid to support victims of natural disasters in Afghanistan.
