HERAT: A total of 135 prisoners, including women, have been released from Herat’s central prison following a pardon issued on the occasion of Eid al-Adha.
According to a statement from the governor’s media office, the release was carried out under an order from the Supreme Court of Afghanistan as part of efforts to implement the decree of the leadership of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and help prisoners reintegrate into normal life.
The statement said the pardon applied to inmates who had only one month remaining in their prison sentences.
Prison officials in Herat said more than 3,000 inmates, including both men and women, are currently being held in the province’s central prison.
