KABUL: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees representative Arafat Jamal says that more than seven million Afghan refugees have returned to Afghanistan to date, with 750,000 returning since the beginning of the current calendar year.
According to Radio Omid correspondent, speaking at an event marking World Refugee Day, Jamal said UNHCR is working to provide a range of services for returning refugees. He noted that the agency delivered assistance and services to more than two million refugees in various sectors over the past year.
He added that, with the support of UNHCR and partner organizations, efforts are underway to help returnees obtain legal and civil documentation, including national identity cards, birth certificates, and other essential documents.
According to Jamal, around 1.5 million people are expected to receive these legal documents and related support services in the coming years.
