Syria’s new Parliament holds first session since Assad’s fall

KABUL: Syria’s newly formed parliament held its first official session in Damascus, 19 months after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government and the establishment of the new administration led by Ahmed al-Sharaa.

In its opening, al-Sharaa urged lawmakers to make parliament a model of responsibility, competence, and public service.

He described the legislature as “a platform for truth and justice” and emphasized its role in nation-building and the country’s reconstruction.

“Syria is writing a new chapter in its history, and we all share the responsibility of building the country’s future,” al-Sharaa said.

Observers view the inaugural session of the new parliament as an important test of the new leadership’s commitment to building an inclusive and participatory political system.

During the Assad family’s rule, Syria’s parliament was widely seen as a body that largely endorsed government decisions.
