KABUL: Spain defeated Argentina 1–0 after extra time to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, securing the country’s second world title.
Substitute forward Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the match during the second half of extra time, giving Spain the decisive victory.
Argentina, who had been reduced to 10 players late in regular time, were unable to defend the title they won in 2022.
With the victory, Spain claimed its second FIFA World Cup title, following its first triumph in 2010, while Argentina’s bid to become only the third nation in history to defend the World Cup came to an end.
The final is also expected to have been Lionel Messi’s last appearance at a FIFA World Cup. The 39-year-old Argentine captain, who led his country to the 2022 World Cup title, was unable to repeat that success in the 2026 tournament.
