KABUL: U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing 50% tariffs on selected imports from Canada, with the new duties set to take effect on August 19.
According to Reuters, citing the White House, the measure was introduced in response to what Washington described as Canada’s “discriminatory treatment” of U.S. automobiles, alcoholic beverages, and dairy products.
The White House said Canada has not only imposed tariffs on American-made vehicles but has also reduced imports of U.S. automobiles by 22% over the past year, while increasing vehicle imports from other countries.
It also stated that the sale of certain U.S. alcoholic beverages has been banned in several Canadian cities.
Trump had previously criticized Canada over smoke drifting into the United States from Canadian wildfires, saying the cost of addressing the smoke had also been factored into the new tariffs.
The latest measures come amid growing trade tensions between the United States and Canada since Trump’s return to office, with both countries imposing tariffs and other trade restrictions in recent years.
