KABUL: U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has said the Trump administration does not want to become involved in prolonged conflicts like those in Iraq and Afghanistan, stressing that Washington’s policy toward Iran is aimed at preventing the country from acquiring nuclear weapons rather than pursuing regime change.
Hegseth said that under the administration’s “America First” and realist foreign policy approach, the United States will ensure that Iran never gains the capability to develop nuclear weapons.
The United States and Iran have remained at odds for years over Tehran’s nuclear program and broader regional tensions. However, the Trump administration has emphasized that it intends to focus on preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons instead of becoming entangled in another long-term military conflict in the Middle East.
