KABUL: Mawlavi Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, says the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has taken extensive measures during the past year to expand telecommunications and internet services across the country.
Speaking at the third press conference of the “Government in the Mirror of the Media” program, the spokesperson said around 350 telecom towers had been activated in remote areas, while the process of activating another 150 towers is underway.
He added that 500 new telecom towers had also been activated with financial support from telecommunications companies.
Mujahid said that, as part of efforts to expand telecommunications infrastructure, 851 kilometers of fiber-optic network had been developed in various parts of the country. In total, 2,932 telecom sites had been constructed nationwide by telecommunications companies, internet service providers and the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ATRA).
He further said that 491,126 SIM cards had been distributed to provide telecommunications services to citizens returning to the country.
According to Mujahid, the telecommunications sector created 184,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities during the 1447 lunar Hijri year.
