Obama: Trump’s war with Iran has weakened Washington’s position

KABUL: Former U.S. President Barack Obama has described Donald Trump’s war with Iran as unnecessary, arguing that instead of achieving its objectives, the conflict has strengthened Iran’s strategic position.

Speaking at a campaign event in Michigan, Obama said the current U.S. president had launched a war that, he argued, nobody wanted and that voters had not endorsed.

Obama said that during his presidency, the Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), had constrained Tehran’s nuclear program without military action or missile strikes.

According to Obama, U.S. bases and allies have come under attack during the conflict, while American forces have been killed and hundreds wounded.

He also claimed that Washington’s missile stockpiles had been reduced to dangerously low levels.
