IEA urges U.S. to act responsibly over possible transfer of Afghan migrants to Pakistan

KABUL: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed concern over reports that the United States may transfer a number of Afghan migrants to Pakistan.

Hafiz Zia Ahmad Takal, the ministry’s head of information and public relations, said in a statement that the United States should act responsibly and carefully regarding the fate of Afghan migrants.

The statement stressed that any decision on the matter should be based on clear bilateral understanding and coordination, while taking into account the rights and legitimate wishes of the migrants.

The ministry also emphasised that protecting the rights of Afghan citizens is the responsibility of the Islamic Emirate, adding that they should be treated with human dignity and in accordance with applicable laws and recognised international principles wherever they are in the world.

It further called on third countries not to bargain with the fate of citizens of other nations in exchange for temporary benefits or other considerations.

The statement concluded that the Islamic Emirate was ready to engage and cooperate constructively to ensure the dignified, safe and voluntary return of Afghan citizens.

The remarks follow earlier reports about a possible U.S. plan to transfer some Afghan migrants to Pakistan.
