U.S. Senate Elections: Abdul El-Sayed says he is proud to stand before voters as senator-elect

KABUL: Muslim Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed has defeated Republican candidate Mike Rogers in the U.S. Senate race in Michigan.

According to international media reports, preliminary results show that El-Sayed secured 52.4 percent of the vote, while his rival received 45.6 percent.

Sources said El-Sayed won the race despite a last-minute endorsement of Rogers by Haley Stevens, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and El-Sayed’s former rival in the Democratic primary, two days before the election.

In a statement following his victory, El-Sayed said: “I am proud to stand before you as your senator-elect.”
