Minister Muttaqi meets U.S. delegation in Kabul

KABUL: The Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaqi, met with Adam Boehler, the U.S. Special Representative for Prisoner Affairs, and his accompanying delegation, including Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. representative for Afghanistan, here in Kabul, the ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

In the meeting, the two sides discussed bilateral relations between Kabul and Washington, the release of prisoners, and the provision of consular services to Afghan citizens residing in the U.S., said the statement.

Minister Muttaqi welcomed the U.S. delegation’s visit to Kabul, considering it a positive step towards improving bilateral relations between Afghanistan and the United States.

The acting Foreign Minister emphasized the need for Afghanistan and the U.S. to move beyond the impacts of the 20-year war and establish positive political and economic relations.

“The Islamic Emirate considers it important to resolve issues through dialogue within the framework of a balanced foreign policy that enables Afghanistan and the U.S. to address matters collaboratively,” the statement quoted him as saying.

Meanwhile, Adam Boehler considered progress in prisoner affairs effective for building trust between Kabul and Washington.

Boehler praised the Islamic Emirate’s efforts in counter-narcotics and ensuring security.

He highlighted the importance of continued discussions between Kabul and Washington and the strengthening of relations through negotiations.

This comes at a time when relations between Afghanistan and the international community are gradually increasing.
