KABUL: The U.S. Department of State in a statement on Monday night announced the removal of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham from the list of designated foreign terrorist organizations, fulfilling a promise made by President Donald Trump.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said starting today, under U.S. immigration and nationality law, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, led by Ahmad al-Sharaa, head of the Syrian Transitional Government, is officially removed from the designated list.
The statement noted that this action is also based on the executive order dated June 30, titled “Lifting Sanctions on Syria,” recognizing the positive steps taken by the new Syrian government under President Ahmad al-Sharaa.
According to the U.S. Department of State, this move is considered an important step toward President Trump’s vision for a “peaceful and stable” Syria.
It is worth mentioning that the Foreign Minister of the Transitional Government of Syria previously interpreted the lifting of U.S. sanctions as a step toward Damascus’s reconstruction and modernization.
