KABUL: Following the rejection of a proposal to continue the suspension of United Nations sanctions on Iran (the “snapback mechanism”) by the UN Security Council, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement on Friday night, condemned the action as “illegal, unjustified, and provocative.”
During a session and voting on Friday evening, members of the UN Security Council voted against a draft resolution prepared by France, the United Kingdom, and Germany, which aimed to prevent the reinstatement of sanctions related to the nuclear deal (JCPOA). This decision effectively confirmed the restoration of all UN sanctions against Iran.
Tehran has accused France, the UK, and Germany of exploiting the JCPOA agreement and the “snapback” mechanism.
The statement noted: “These governments disregarded the understanding between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reached on September 9, 2025, and overlooked the international community’s welcoming response. This was despite their main justification for the snapback being Iran’s alleged non-cooperation with the IAEA.”
The Iranian Foreign Ministry also claimed that the UN Security Council ignored Iran’s reasonable proposal, which the world had acknowledged, by making excuses.
It is noteworthy that the proposed resolution by France, the UK, and Germany to prevent the reinstatement of all UN sanctions on Iran received support from China, Russia, Pakistan, and Algeria.
Conversely, the UK, France, the U.S., Denmark, Slovenia, Sierra Leone, Panama, UNAMA, and Somalia voted against it, while Guyana and South Korea abstained.
