Khalilzad: Warm welcome for Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaqi in India has deeply upset Pakistan

KABUL: Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. envoy for peace in Afghanistan, pointing to Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaqi’s visit to India, noted that the warm reception he received has significantly upset Pakistan.

In a post on his X on Wednesday, he pointed out the similarities in the discontent expressed by Pakistan and the Khorasan branch of ISIS regarding this visit, emphasizing that Islamabad’s decision on how to react to Mr. Muttaqi’s trip lacks wisdom.

He added that it is not surprising that the Pakistani authorities and their supporters are troubled by the Afghan Foreign Minister’s visit to India and the extensive welcome he received.

Khalilzad urged both Afghanistan and Pakistan to turn to diplomacy to prevent further recent attacks and counterattacks, aiming to avoid escalating tensions.

This comes as today marks the last day of Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaqi’s trip to India, which was scheduled from October 9 to 16.
