Increased military privileges in Pakistan spark widespread civil protests; “Death to Dictatorship”

KABUL: Following the proposal of the 27th amendment to Pakistan’s constitution in the Senate, civil activists have called for nationwide and road protests.
The Economic Times reported that the protests are set to take place today across Pakistan.
Protesters, who are members of the “Constitutional Support Movement,” argue that the proposed amendment shakes the foundations of the country’s constitution.
They plan to march with slogans such as “Long live democracy,” “Death to dictatorship,” and calls for the release of “political prisoners.”
According to the opposition to the Pakistani government, the proposed amendment would alter the constitutional structure in a way that would “paralyze” the judiciary and senior officials.
The recently presented 27th amendment includes various privileges for the Pakistani military, including a lifetime field marshal rank for the current army chief, while retaining all existing privileges.
Civil activists argue that such privileges will lead to reduced transparency and accountability.
