KABUL: Iraq conducted its sixth parliamentary election since the fall of Saddam Hussein, with millions of voters heading to the polling centers, media reported.
Al Jazeera reported on Tuesday evening that 21 million eligible voters participated at 4,501 polling centers across Iraq, selecting 329 representatives from a pool of 7,750 candidates to enter the parliament.
The elections began at 7:00 AM local time and concluded at 6:00 PM.
The first results are expected to be announced 24 hours after the voting ends.
The elections took place amid disappointment and despair within Iraqi communities, as many believe these elections are merely a means for elites and political parties to divide the country’s oil wealth, with little prospect for real change.
Iraq, a wealthy oil-producing country, has experienced significant turmoil since the U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein and is currently enjoying relative stability.
