Concerns about violent crackdown on protesters in Iran; Araghchi accuses Trump of sending “dangerous” message

KABUL: Volker Turk, the High Commissioner for Human Rights at the United Nations, has recently expressed concern over what he sees as violent crackdowns on protesters in Iran.
Mr. Turk noted that Human Rights Watch is actively monitoring protests in Iran and following reports of violence against demonstrators.
Meanwhile, Dr. Sayed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, issued a strong statement on Friday night in response to recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, accusing him of sending a “reckless and dangerous” message.
Araghchi wrote on X, “Trump’s message — likely influenced by those who fear diplomacy or mistakenly deem it unnecessary — is indeed reckless and dangerous.”
He compared Trump’s comments regarding how to handle protesters in Iran with the deployment of National Guard forces within U.S. borders.
While acknowledging the legal right of some Iranians to protest peacefully over currency fluctuations, Araghchi emphasized that violent incidents, including attacks on police facilities and the throwing of Molotov cocktails at police officers, have also been reported.
Araghchi deemed Trump’s assertion that the U.S. would come to the aid of protesters if they were shot at as interference in Iran’s internal matters, stating that Iranians would certainly reject such interference.
According to reports, at least ten people have been killed and dozens injured during the recent five days of protests in Iran.
