Opposition grows to U.S. arrest of Maduro; New York Mayor and African Union Respond

KABUL: Following the arrest of Nicolás Maduro, the President of Venezuela, by U.S. special forces, the African Union and New York City Mayor Zheran Mamadani have voiced their opposition to this action.
Mamadani, who stated that the former president of Venezuela has been transferred to the “Brooklyn” military base within his jurisdiction, referred to the arrest as an “act of warfare” and an assault on an independent country.
He posted on X: “This blatant attempt at regime change not only affects people outside the country but directly impacts the citizens of New York, including tens of thousands of Venezuelans who consider this city their home.”
The African Union has also expressed serious concern about the situation in Venezuela, labeling the arrest of the country’s president as “kidnapping.”
In its statement, the African Union emphasized its firm commitment to the fundamental principles of international law, including respect for the sovereignty of nations, their territorial integrity, and the right of peoples to determine their own destiny, as outlined in the United Nations Charter. The union expressed solidarity with the people of Venezuela.
Before this, leaders from several other countries, including Russia, Iran, and Brazil, along with some U.S. lawmakers, also condemned the arrest of Venezuela’s president by American military forces.
