Beijing condemns arrest of Venezuela’s President as Security Council holds an emergency meeting

KABUL: China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spokesman in a statement on Saturday night, described the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by the United States as shocking and condemned the action.

In the statement, the spokesperson expressed deep concern over the blatant use of force by the U.S. against an independent nation and its president.

Following a request from the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and with support from Colombia, China, and Russia have called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council to review the U.S. military action against Caracas. Reports indicate that this emergency meeting is scheduled to take place tomorrow (Monday).

Additionally, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that such hegemonic actions by the United States seriously violate international law and the sovereignty of Venezuela, threatening peace and security in the Latin American and Caribbean region. China firmly opposes these actions.

Beijing has urged Washington to adhere to international law and the objectives and principles outlined in the United Nations Charter, calling for an end to violations of national sovereignty.

Meanwhile, the Constitutional Court of Venezuela has appointed Delcy Rodríguez, the country’s vice president, as the interim president in a ruling.
