KABUL: U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the Venezuelan government has initiated a widespread process of releasing political prisoners in the country.
He made the remarks early today on his social media platform, Truth Social, adding that the released Venezuelan political prisoners were fortunate that the U.S. took action and did what was necessary to facilitate their freedom.
While emphasizing that those released should never forget their circumstances, Trump warned that forgetting could lead to negative consequences for them in the future.
It remains unclear how many political prisoners will be released from Venezuelan detention facilities.
This comes in the wake of the arrest of Nicolás Maduro, the President of Venezuela, and his wife by U.S. authorities.
One of the criticisms against Maduro’s government has been the repression of political opponents and their imprisonment.
