Is U.S. withdrawal from Iraq beginning? Forces exit Ain al-Assad Base

KABUL: U.S. media reports indicate that American military personnel have withdrawn from the Ain al-Assad base, one of their principal facilities in Iraq.

Fox News citing sources from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), reported on Saturday that the completion of the U.S. withdrawal from Ain al-Assad, which is part of the military consolidation in the region announced for summer 2025, took place on Friday (two days ago).

A source stated, “Due to significant progress made there, we were able to consolidate our forces. ISIS is no longer posing a threat beyond the capacity of the Iraqi government to counter independently.”

Credible military sources confirmed that the Pentagon is in the process of consolidating its forces from areas outside the federal territory of Iraq, as focusing on other regions, including Syria, to combat remnants of ISIS needs to take priority.

Following the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Ain al-Assad, Iraqi forces have assumed responsibility for the base.

According to the agreement between Washington and Baghdad, the process of withdrawing U.S. military personnel from Iraq is set to officially begin in 2026.
