KABUL: Amid ongoing tensions between European countries and the U.S. regarding the future of Greenland, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, has met with several lawmakers from both the Democratic and Republican parties in the U.S.
In a post on her X account on Monday night, she emphasized the necessity of “unconditional and firm” respect for the sovereignty of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark, stating that this issue is of vital importance for transatlantic relations.
As tensions rise daily between the European Union and Donald Trump, the U.S. President, over the ownership of Greenland, Trump’s recent remarks have intensified the situation.
In a letter to Norway’s Prime Minister, he expressed his interest in acquiring Greenland, stating that not winning the Nobel Peace Prize does not obligate him to think about peace.
This statement has led to interpretations suggesting that Trump may even consider military options for acquiring Greenland.
In response to Trump’s intentions, nearly ten European countries and powers have dispatched military forces to Greenland to demonstrate their opposition to his plans for acquisition.
