KABUL: After the official exit of the U.S. government from the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the organization’s director-general, on Sunday described Washington’s reasons for this withdrawal as “incorrect.”
Dr. Tedros indicated that the departure of the United States, as a founding member of the organization, would make the world less secure.
He stated, “Unfortunately, the reasons presented for the United States’ decision to leave the WHO are not correct. The announcement not only poses a threat to the U.S. but also to global security.”
Dr. Tedros expressed hope that the U.S. would return with a more active partnership with the World Health Organization in the future.
The U.S. government officially withdrew from the WHO two days ago, citing reasons such as “poor management of COVID-19, excessive closeness to China, lack of structural reforms, significant financial contributions, and prioritization of U.S. interests,” among other factors.
