KABUL: The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has described the arrest of Nicolás Maduro, the President of Venezuela, as unjustifiable and has called for his prompt release by the United States.
Russian state news agency TASS reported on Monday night, that Moscow described the arrest of the Venezuelan president by the U.S. as a “blatant and outrageous” violation of international law, adding that this action undermines the UN Charter.
The report states: “What happened in Caracas is indefensible. This is a clear violation of international law and the principles of the UN Charter. While anyone may have their own interpretation of ‘moral standards,’ international relations must be based on the principles of international law and mutual respect.”
Moscow emphasized that any issues between Washington and Caracas should be resolved through “constructive dialogue.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry also noted that the Kremlin welcomes Bolivarian efforts to maintain political unity, address the threats of crisis, uphold the constitution, and create conditions necessary for peaceful and sustainable growth.
Russia, regarded as a key ally of Venezuela, especially under Nicolás Maduro’s government, has previously expressed strong opposition to the arrest of Maduro by the U.S.
