KABUL: Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the prominent son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has been killed in his home country, media reported.
Al Jazeera citing Abdullah Osman, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi’s lawyer and political advisor, reported on Tuesday night, that Saif al-Islam was targeted and killed by armed individuals at his residence in the town of Zintan, located approximately 136 kilometers southwest of Tripoli, the capital of Libya.
Following the reports of his death, Gaddafi’s political team issued a statement saying he was murdered by four masked men in a “cowardly and treasonous” attack. The statement noted that Saif al-Islam had engaged with the assailants and that the armed men destroyed surveillance cameras to hide the evidence of the attack.
As of now, no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the killing of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi.
Although he held no official position in Libya at the time, he was regarded as the closest figure to his father, Muammar Gaddafi.
Muammar Gaddafi was ultimately killed by government opponents during widespread protests in Libya in 2011.
