Iran’s supreme leader calls for mass public participation in Feb. 11 rallies

KABUL: Ali Khamenei, the leader of Iran, has urged citizens to take to the streets on February 11 to celebrate the 47th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.
In a televised statement on Monday evening, Khamenei emphasized that this day has historically represented the “power and dignity” of the Iranian people—people who, according to him, are “determined, motivated, steadfast, appreciative, and aware of their own interests and corruption.”
He added that public participation in the rally for the 47th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution would act as a deterrent against the “enemy” and its aspirations against the country and its national interests.
Khamenei stated, “The Iranian nation stands firm. The manifestation of this steadfastness is on February 11. This rally is unparalleled in the world. We never see anywhere that, after many years of independence and national days, such large crowds gather across the country to express themselves.”
The Islamic Revolution in Iran took place on February 11, 1979, overthrowing the ruling monarchy.
Approximately a month ago, the son of the former Shah of Iran also issued a similar call for protests against the current government.
