KABUL: S. Paul Kapur, the Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, stated that various U.S. agencies are currently working on formulating the Trump administration’s policy towards Afghanistan.
He made the remarks during a hearing of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, which was published on the committee’s website on Wednesday night.
Speaking before U.S. lawmakers in a session titled “U.S. Foreign Policy in the Region,” Mr. Kapur added that developing the White House’s new policy regarding Afghanistan requires further assessments and approaches.
According to the Assistant Secretary, U.S. lawmakers will be informed of this policy in due course. However, he did not provide further details regarding the new U.S. policy towards Afghanistan.
It appears the U.S. administration under Donald Trump is seeking to change the country’s policies and approaches towards Afghanistan compared to the past four years.
This comes at a time when, in recent months, official and unofficial U.S. delegations have visited Afghanistan at least three times, and prisoner exchanges between Kabul and Washington have also been successfully conducted.
