Danish King visits Greenland amid tensions with U.S. over sovereignty

KABUL: Denmark’s King Frederik X has arrived in Nuuk for a three-day visit, as tensions continue between the United States and Denmark over the status of Greenland.

According to Agence France-Presse, the visit is widely seen as a gesture of support for Greenland amid renewed controversy surrounding remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump about acquiring the Arctic island.

Frederik X was welcomed at Nuuk airport by local officials, with Greenland’s flag prominently displayed during the reception.

Speaking after his arrival, the Danish monarch described Trump’s insistence on acquiring Greenland as “very stressful.” He said the situation had been unsettling, adding: “It has been frightening for all of us. We have never experienced anything like this in our world in Greenland.”

The king emphasized that the people of Greenland and their chosen path remain important to him and would continue to be so.

Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring the strategically located Arctic island, including during his previous term in office, raising diplomatic tensions between Washington and Copenhagen.
