KABUL: A representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Arafat Jamal has stated that the priorities and needs of Afghan returnees have been identified for the current calendar year, and UNHCR activities will be planned accordingly.
He made the remarks during a meeting with Mawlavi Abdul Kabir, Afghanistan’s Minister of Refugees and Repatriation.
According to a statement released by the ministry on Sunday, Jamal emphasized the importance of strengthening administrative capacities and addressing challenges faced by returning Afghan migrants.
He noted that last year UNHCR provided services to 2.2 million Afghan returnees, highlighting the scale of support required to ensure effective assistance.
Meanwhile, Minister Kabir stressed the importance of coordination among government agencies and international organizations to efficiently address the needs of returnees.
Both sides agreed to intensify humanitarian assistance to returning Afghan migrants throughout the current year. The ministry noted that over the past two years, more than five million Afghans have returned from countries including Iran and Pakistan.
