International Women’s Day: More than 3,000 women’s cases handled in Afghanistan

KABUL: The Ministry of Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice says its inspectors have addressed the majority of complaints submitted by women over the past ten months.

In a statement released Sunday, which coincides with International Women’s Day, the ministry said that out of 3,511 registered complaints, 3,481 cases had been reviewed and handled in the past ten months.

The ministry emphasized its commitment to restoring the Islamic rights of women and said it would continue efforts until women are protected from injustice and granted their rights as mothers, sisters, daughters, and wives under Islamic principles.

“Women’s rights should not be limited to a single day, stressing that every Muslim has a duty to respect the rights of women as sister, mother, wife, and daughter,” said the statement.

As examples of recent actions, the ministry said that within the past week, 79 women were rescued from domestic violence, nine forced marriages were prevented, and 15 women received their inheritance rights.

It also noted that inspectors recently prevented the illegal marriage of a four-year-old child to a 39-year-old disabled man in Ghazni Province.
